Position Descriptions

President-Elect

1 Year as President-elect. The full term is 3 Years (First year serving as President-Elect, second year serving as President, and third-year serving as Past President). Estimate of 3-5 hours per week. This individual serves as a voting member and 2nd Delegate to NMHIMA and performs the duties of the President in the event of absence or incapacity of the President to serve.

Qualifications/Desired Attributes:

  • Excellent communication and management skills
  • Has had previous board/chair or committee experience
  • Shows strength under pressure
  • Has a professional image
  • Exhibits high-interest level in the state and national associations
  • Demonstrates willingness to speak out on issues, supports President
  • Member of AHIMA and NMHIMA; Must have or acquire AHIMA credential six months into the position
  • Open-minded, able to implement new ideas; good listener
  • Has high ethical standards

Secretary

Two-year term. Estimate of 6-8 hours per month. This individual is responsible for distributing and maintaining accurate records of NMHIMA.

Qualifications/Desired Attributes:

  • Excellent writing skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Experience in taking minutes
  • Ability to meet deadlines and produce minutes on a timely basis
  • Ability to make and take criticisms and suggestions
  • Open-minded and able to discuss matters relevant to AHIMA/NMHIMA
  • Presents a professional image of NMHIMA and has high ethical standards

Treasurer

Two-year term. Estimate of 6-10 hours per month. This individual is a voting member of NMHIMA and is responsible for maintaining the expenses and funds of NMHIMA.

Qualifications/Desired Attributes:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Basic knowledge of bookkeeping procedures and banking
  • Detail-oriented & computer literate
  • Good communicator
  • Efficient, goal-oriented mindset
  • Ability to make and take criticisms and suggestions
  • Devotes time to dedicate to NMHIMA
  • Presents a professional image of NMHIMA and has high ethical standards

Member-at-Large

Three-year term. Estimate of 5 hours per month. This individual serves as a voting member of NMHIMA and provides leadership to NMHIMA by providing insight and gained knowledge from shared experiences.

Qualifications/Desired Attributes:

  • Leadership role in the field of work
  • Excellent communication skills, both written & verbal
  • Takes the initiative and is responsible
  • Shows interest in advocacy in AHIMA and NMHIMA
  • Ability to make and take criticisms and suggestions
  • Dedicates time to devote to NMHIMA
  • Open-minded and able to discuss matters relevant to AHIMA/NMHIMA
  • Presents a professional image of NMHIMA and has high ethical standards

Nominating Committee (2 positions)

One-year term. Estimate of 5 hours per month; may increase during election timeframe. Seek and recruit individuals for the annual ballot for the available board positions and create the electronic ballot in the month of May.

  • Responsible and demonstrates success in recruitment strategies

  • Presents a professional image of NMHIMA and has high ethical standards
  • Represents NMHIMA and promotes the Board

Student Member

One-year term. Estimate 5 hours per month. Represents the voice of students on the NMHIMA board and promotes student engagement with NMHIMA and AHIMA.

Qualifications/Desired Attributes:

  • Eager to serve and positive attitude
  • Must be a current student or current graduate of an accredited AHIMA program with any focus related to health information
  • Must be an AHIMA Student or New Graduate Member only
  • Takes the initiative and suggests new ideas to engage students
  • Dedicates time to devote to NMHIMA
  • Presents a professional image of NMHIMA and has high ethical standards
